We plan out a Permaculture Site Survey for an Off Grid Property

For our April workshop we walked a friend’s land and did a site survey for an off grid property. This is our brainstorming planning session.

Considerations:

Access
Water – creeks, ponds
Climate – wind, rainfall, USDA Zone, Sun exposure
Take a shovel and a bucket. Dig a hole to evaluate how quickly water is absorbed in the soil.
Are utilities available? What is the cost to add a meter, for example (it is a lot more than you may think).
Off grid?
Water catchment
We also cover things that you may not have thought about – is there a quarry nearby? (is there a lot of dump truck traffic?).
What are the neighbors like? If you don’t like ATVs and guns you may want to know that the neighbor rides ATVs and shoots guns at daybreak on the weekends (a common occurrence in rural KS, especially near hunting season) before you move in there. Visit at different times of the days and week, especially on the weekend.
