Thriving The Future Ep. 33 – Your Social Capital Debt

The Unwritten Rules of Social Capital and Your Social Capital Debt

Social Capital Background

Capital is a way to store wealth. It works best within small tribes, or groups of people. Beyond that, you need money – a thing that represents wealth stored somewhere else.

Every form of capital has a form of currency that it trades in. That trading in the currency of that capital relates products, service. For social capital, the currency is connections and relationships. It feeds into influence, relationships, political power.

The Unwritten Rules of Social Capital

If I do something for you, you generally “owe” me a favor.

Social capital can be traded for other capital.

(Notice how uncomfortable this quickly becomes. Everybody knows these things, but if you verbalize them then you are seen as cold, calculated, and that you are using people.)

Social Capital Debt

“Everyone subconsciously keeps a tally book (of their social capital debt)”

We are starved for social capital. We have let our social capital debt build up.

If you have that debt, your sphere of influence shrinks.

Do you have social capital debt?

How are you building social capital?
